Review of Quantum Nicosia Marathon 8 December 2024 The Legacy of Even Greater Success

The Biggest Sports Fundraising Event held on the streets of Nicosia.

On Sunday, December 8, the Quantum Nicosia Marathon 2024 turned the heart of Nicosia into a dynamic open-air sports arena. This year’s event welcomed more than 4,000 participants from 38 countries, who competed in five exciting races.
The event highlighted the capital’s rich history, culture, and renowned hospitality, making it a celebration of Philanthropy, Health, and Unity.

Participants competed in the following races:

  • Marathon (42.195 km)
  • Half Marathon (21.1 km)
  • Stelios Kyriakides 7,7 Miles Race (12.4 km)
  • 5k Individual & Team Race (5.5 km)
  • Quantum sMile Run (1.6 km) – A fun family run.

The scenic routes began and ended at the Nicosia Municipal Theatre, weaving through iconic landmarks such as the Venetian WallsFamagusta GateLiberty Monumentancient AqueductEleftheria Squareold Town Hall, and Paphos Gate. The longer races ventured further, passing through the historic center of Kaimakli, with the Marathon and Half Marathon extending along the Green Line to the University of Cyprus campus. Marathon runners also had the opportunity to experience the serene beauty of the Athalassa National Forest Park.

The festive mood was enhanced by the musicians and DJs that were set up along the routes, who gave energy to the runners and created a great atmosphere.

A Positive & Festive 360° Experience

This year’s Quantum Nicosia Marathon included exciting events that enriched the positive and festive  atmosphere, creating a well-rounded experience.

  • Evexia Expo: A wellness expo held at the CYENS Centre of Excellence, featuring health-related exhibits alongside the BIB pick up.
  • Shakeout Run “One Nicosia”: On Saturday 7 December, a free guided 7 km run along the walls of Nicosia took place. This unique experience included getting to know the entire city of Nicosia, on both sides of the Green Line.
  • Pasta Party: Held on 7 December, this culinary event featured live music by Dee Jay Radio, and pasta from Pizza Hut’s Pasta Brava and set the festive tone for race day.
  • Interactive seminar: Science & running
    In the framework of the Evexia Expo, on Saturday 7 December, sports scientists from the Cyprus Sports Medicine Research Centre shared their expertise with runners of all levels. The overwhelming participation of the running community encourages us to organise similar free seminars in the future.
  • Documentary Screening
    After the seminar, attendees had the opportunity to watch the documentary “Boston: the Documentary”. The documentary included extensive coverage of Stelios Kyriakides, the legendary winner of the 1946 Boston Marathon, highlighting the values of endurance, determination and philanthropy that embody the spirit of the marathon.
  • Winners’ Festival
    This year, a vibrant Winners’ Festival took place on Sunday, December 8, alongside the races in the park next to the Nicosia Municipal Theatre. Embracing the message “All Winners,” the festival brought together individual runners and running clubs, who set up their tents within the park, creating a lively and festive atmosphere filled with food and drink.
  • Recovery Support
    Ice Power, the official recovery sponsor, along with physiotherapists from the European University Cyprus, provided immediate support to runners post-race.

Nicosia’s Warm Embrace

The Quantum Nicosia Marathon would not have been possible without the enthusiastic support of the city and its people. Runners from 38 countries repeatedly praised Nicosia as an exceptionally hospitable city, highlighting the warmth and kindness they experienced throughout their visit. The seamless collaboration with local authorities, organisations, and more than 200 Volunteers ensured a truly world-class event.

Traffic Arrangements for Saturday 7 December and Sunday 8 December 2024

The Quantum Nicosia Marathon will take place on Sunday, 8 December 8 2024, with over 4,000 runners participating. To ensure the safety of participants and minimise inconvenience to the public, traffic arrangements have been approved by all relevant authorities.

The Organizing Committee of the Marathon, with the approval of all relevant authorities, announces that on Saturday, December 7, 2024, from 4:00 PM, and on Sunday, December 8, 2024, from 6:00 AM to 1:00 PM at the latest, the following roads in Nicosia will be closed to traffic due to the charity road races of the Quantum Nicosia Marathon.

  • Mikis Theodorakis Street (formerly Museum Street): Closed from 4:00 PM on Saturday to 3:00 PM on Sunday.

Quantum Nicosia Marathon 8 December 2024

Nicosia will host the Quantum Nicosia Marathon on 8 December 2024 for yet another year. The event is organised by the Athanasios Ktorides Foundation, in collaboration with the Nicosia Municipality.

It is the biggest running event in Nicosia and promises a unique experience for athletes and spectators alike.

The race programme includes:

  • Marathon (42.195 km)
  • Half Marathon (21.1 km)
  • Stelios Kyriakides race 7.7 miles (12.4 km)
  • Individual and Team Race 5.5 km
  • Quantum sMile Run (1.6 km), a relaxed run for the whole family

 The Routes

All routes start from the iconic Nicosia Municipal Theatre. The 5,5 km route passes through landmarks of old Nicosia, including the Venetian Walls, the Famagusta Gate, the Liberty Monument, the ancient Aqueduct, Eleftheria Square, the old Town Hall, and the Paphos Gate. The longer routes continue and offer runners views of the Ancient Aqueduct, the Freedom Monument, Famagusta Gate and the historic centre of Kaimakli. For the Marathon and Ηalf Μarathon, the route extends along the Green Line, reaching the campus of the University of Cyprus, while the Marathon runners will then enjoy the beauty and tranquillity of the Athalassa National Forest Park. All routes finish at the starting point, passing by the Archaeological Museum.

NEW EVENTS that enhance the Festive Experience and are in line with the Marathon spirit:

  • Evexia Expo:

A Wellness Expo to be hosted at the CYENS Centre of Excellence on Saturday, December 7, from 10:00 am to 6:00 pm. The expo is open to all and is being held as part of the collection of participation packages, which runners will be able to pick up on Thursday 5, Friday 6 and Saturday 7 December. 

  • Shakeout Run «Οne Nicosia»:
    On Saturday, December 7, at 10:00 in the morning, a running tour of the city of Nicosia will take place. The route will include a tour of the walled city of Nicosia, on both sides of the Green Line, with a total distance of approximately 7 kilometres.

Important: Due to the crossing of the Green Line, participants must have their ID with them in order to continue the run in the occupied part of Nicosia.

Participation in the Shakeout Run is free of charge.

  • Science & Running: Discover the Secrets of Performance.

As part of EVEXIA EXPO, on Saturday at 2:00 p.m. the sports scientists of the Cyprus Sports Medicine Research Centre will be at the CYENS Centre of Excellence, ready to share their knowledge on improving running performance and fitness care with the help of science. Participation is free of charge.

The great Charity Marathon of Nicosia “Quantum Nicosia Marathon” on December 10, 2023

Υπό την αιγίδα της Πρώτης Κυρίας της Κύπρου, Φιλίππας Καρσερά Χριστοδουλίδη

Την Κυριακή 10 Δεκεμβρίου 2023 θα πραγματοποιηθεί στη Λευκωσία ο Μεγάλος Φιλανθρωπικός Μαραθώνιος της Λευκωσίας «Quantum Nicosia Marathon 2023», με αγώνες Μαραθωνίου, Ημιμαραθωνίου, 7,7 Miles (12.400μ.), 5χλμ. (ατομικό και εταιρικό αγώνα) και 1mile (1.600μ.) και που απευθύνεται σε όλους τους πολίτες και ιδιαίτερα στους μικρούς μαθητές της εκπαιδευτικής κοινότητας στα πλαίσια του μηνύματος του κοινωνικού αθλητισμού, του αθλητισμού  της συμμετοχής και της δια βίου άσκησης.

Ένας Μαραθώνιος που οργανώνεται και χρηματοδοτείται αποκλειστικά από το Ίδρυμα «Αθανάσιος Κτωρίδης» με έντονα τα στοιχεία της Εθνικής  κοινωνικής προσφοράς, στηρίζοντας το Ίδρυμα Αλκίνοος Αρτεμίου για παιδιά με ογκολογικές και αιματολογικές παθήσεις, το Σύλλογο Γονέων και Φίλων Παιδιών με Καρδιοπάθεια, το Φιλανθρωπικός οργανισμό ‹Μικροί Ήρωες, το Δημοτικό Πολυπολιτισμικό Κέντρο Λευκωσίας, τον Παγκύπριο Αυτιστικό Σύλλογο, την Παγκύπρια Επιτροπή Μητέρων – Συγγενών Εθνοφρουρών ΠΕΜΣΕ και τον Ανεξάρτητο Φορέα Κοινωνικής Στήριξης.

Αυτή τη χρονιά ο «Quantum Nicosia Marathon 23» έχει τεθεί υπό την αιγίδα της αξιότιμης κυρίας Φιλίππας Καρσερά Χριστοδουλίδη, που όπως ανέφερε και η ίδια, κατά την διάρκεια της Δημοσιογραφικής Διάσκεψης, για την ανακοίνωση  και του φετινού Μαραθωνίου, είναι και θα είναι πρώτο μέλημα της τα παιδιά και οι έφηβοι, οι οποίοι θα έχουν πάντοτε την στήριξη και την αγάπη της. Η ίδια πρόσθεσε επίσης, ότι μέσα στο πρόγραμμα της ως Πρώτη Κυρία είναι η προστασία του περιβάλλοντος.

Κατά τη διάρκεια της Δημοσιογραφικής Διάσκεψης, που πραγματοποιήθηκε στις 27.9.23 στο Νέο Δημαρχείο Λευκωσίας, ο Διευθυντής Εκδηλώσεων του Ιδρύματος «Αθανάσιος Κτωρίδης»  κ. Χατζησάββας παρουσίασε το πρόγραμμα που θα περιβάλλει τον «Quantum Nicosia Marathon 23». Συγκεκριμένα, την  Κυριακή 26/11 στο κάτω διάζωμα της Πλατείας Ελευθερίας, στο χώρο όπου είχε γίνει και πέρσι, θα πραγματοποιηθεί από τη Les Miles αθλητικό πρόγραμμα 3 ωρών το οποίο θα συνδυάζει την μουσική με την κίνηση. Την ίδια μέρα στο χώρο θα βρίσκονται  εκπρόσωποι του Ιδρύματος «Αθανάσιος Κτωρίδης», οι οποίοι θα βοηθούν όσους θα θέλουν να κάνουν εγγραφή στους αγώνες του μαραθωνίου . Στο μεταξύ στον  ίδιο χώρο θα πραγματοποιηθεί εκκίνηση δρομέων, οι οποίοι θα τρέξουν μέσα στην πόλη ως προπόνηση αλλά και ως ένας τρόπος να γνωρίσουν την Λευκωσία υπό την καθοδήγηση της κυρίας Πόλας Χατζηπαπάς.

Αξίζει να σημειωθεί ότι φέτος το Κέντρο Εγγραφών και Παράδοσης των BIB numbers θα λειτουργεί την Παρασκευή 8 Δεκεμβρίου στις 10:00 – 17:00, Σάββατο 9 Δεκεμβρίου στις 10:00 – 17:00 και Κυριακή 10 Δεκεμβρίου στις 06:00 – 12:00 στο χώρο του Αρχαιολογικού Μουσείου Λευκωσίας. Τις ίδιες μέρες οι επισκέπτες θα μπορούν να συμμετάσχουν σε ξεναγήσεις που θα πραγματοποιούνται υπό τον σχεδιασμό της Έφορου  Αρχαιοτήτων κυρίας Ευτυχίας Καΐλας.

Παράλληλα, μια ακόμη πρωτοβουλία, σε συνεργασία με το Υπουργείο Εξωτερικών  και τον Σύνδεσμο Συζύγων Διπλωματών(ξένων και κυπρίων), είναι η διοργάνωση του International Bazaar, το οποίο πραγματοποιείται κάθε χρόνο. Το International Bazaar θα πραγματοποιηθεί την ημέρα της μεγάλης εκδήλωσης του «Quantumn Nicosia Marathon 2023» και μέχρι τώρα έχουν δηλώσει συμμετοχή σε αυτό το φιλανθρωπικό παζάρι 15 πρεσβείες, οι οποίες θα προσφέρουν φαγητά και άλλα προϊόντα των χωρών τους. Οι Εκπρόσωποι πρεσβειών έχουν ενημερωθεί ότι τα έσοδα τους θα τα προφέρουν ηλεκτρονικά στα ιδρύματα που στηρίζει το Ίδρυμα «Αθανάσιος Κτωρίδης» και αυτό θα γίνεται με την ίδια διαδικασία που ακολουθούν δρομείς και άλλα άτομα που θα ήθελαν να προσφέρουν.

Στη συνέχεια η κα,Αποστολούμη, Τεχνική Σύμβουλος και εμπνεύστρια του Περιβαλλοντικού Προγράμματος, ανακοίνωσε τις ενέργειες του προγράμματος «RunDonateProtect» και θα υλοποιηθεί σε τρεις κατευθυντήριους άξονες προστασίας, αειφορική χρήσης και βιώσιμης ανάπτυξης (Δασικό Περιβάλλον, Ανακύκλωση Υλικών και Μετακινήσεις). 

Αξίζει να σημειωθεί ότι μέσα στα πλαίσια αυτού του περιβαλλοντικού προγράμματος θα πραγματοποιηθεί στις 18.11.23 στο Δασικό Πάρκο Αθαλάσσας, δεντροφύτευση με τη συνεργασία του Τμήματος Δασών. Τέλος, η κα.Αποστολούμη ανακοίνωσε την εξαιρετική συνεργασία με το Υφυπουργείο Τουρισμού και της AIMS, συνεργασία η οποία προβάλλει το «Quantum Nicosia Marathon 2023», στο διεθνές.

Λαμβάνοντας τον λόγο ο κ. Παπαποστόλου, Racing Director του «Quantum Nicosia Marathon 2023», αφού ευχαρίστησε όλους τους συμμετέχοντες, πρόσθεσε ότι όλες οι διαδρομές σχεδιάζονται με βάση των κανονισμών, ιδανικές για δρομείς που θέλουν να ξεπεράσουν τα όριά τους. Η διαδρομή του μαραθωνίου περνάει μέσα από σημαντικά σημεία αναφοράς της πρωτεύουσας. Το μεγαλύτερο μέρος της διαδρομής είναι έξω από το αστικό περιβάλλον, διατρέχει το Πάρκο Αθαλάσσας και τις εγκαταστάσεις του Κρατικού Πανεπιστημίου Κύπρου.

Τέλος, η Διευθύντρια του Ιδρύματος «Αθανάσιος Κτωρίδης» κα. Κούρου, αφού ευχαρίστησε όσους προσφέρουν σε όλη αυτήν την διοργάνωση του «Quantum Nicosia Marathon 2023» και που αποτελεί ένα φιλανθρωπικό πανήγυρι, τόνισε ότι ο εθελοντισμός είναι η μεγαλύτερη ανάγκη του ανθρώπου για αλληλεγγύη. Τελειώνοντας, η ίδια πρόσθεσε ότι μαζί με την ομάδα των φίλων εθελοντών που προσφέρουν στην διοργάνωση αυτής της φιλανθρωπικής γιορτής φέτος, έρχεται να ενισχύσει και η ομάδα των Special Olympics.

Athanasios Ktorides Foundation announces scholarships for Cypriot students in European, U.K. and U.S. universities for 2023-2024

The Athanasios Ktorides Foundation, supporting cultural, educational, environment, health and sports programmes since 2008, announces a series of scholarships providing up to 15 scholarships for the 2023/2024 academic year for undergraduate, graduate and post-graduate studies in leading European, U.K. and U.S. universities to individuals with Cypriot nationality or citizenship.

The deadline for submission of applications and documentation is 30 October 2023.

‘Quantum Nicosia Marathon’ on 10 December 2023 Registrations have opened

The annual charity and cultural event “Quantum Nicosia Marathon 2023” returns this year with a full programme of races and events on December 10, 2023.

Organiser and exclusive sponsor of the event since 2010 is the Athanasios Ktoridis Foundation, which as always aims to combine sports, culture and charity.

Registrations have officially opened following a working lunch with representatives of institutional partners and the volunteers who help us offer our love and financial support to our fellow citizens and to the children whose smiles make life beautiful.

In order to ensure the success and the smooth organisation of the “Quantum Nicosia Marathon 2023”, it is well known that the friends of the Foundation are essential, and especially the volunteers from our partners the National Guard and ELDYK, the Scouts, Civil Defense, Ministry of Health, OKYPI, Cyprus Public Transport, and the running clubs, whom we thank from the bottom of our hearts.

Registrations have started at https://www.nicosiamarathon.com/races/ and the participation of thousands of runners from Cyprus and abroad is expected again this year.

On Sunday, December 10, the races will start in front of the Municipal Theatre, with the Marathon (42.195 km), Half Marathon (21.1 km), the honorary “Stelios Kyriakides 7.7 miles” (12.39 km), the 5 km race (individual and corporate) and the family Quantum sMile Run (1.6 km).

The runners will pass through four municipalities, viewing and enjoying their sights, and after passing through the heart of Nicosia, they will finish at the landmark Municipal Theatre which is the cultural centre of the capital city.

This year, the entire route will be enhanced with music, thus giving strength and enthusiasm to the runners.

All the routes have been designed by experts in the field, led by Race Director Evangelos Papapostolou and Chrysa Apostoloumi, with the full cooperation and support of the Nicosia Municipality, the Cyprus Police and the Department of Public Works.

A month before the big race, sports-themed events are being planned. The “sports fiesta”, in the area of Eleftheria Square, will be open for everyone to participate in sports exercises supervised by qualified trainers. There will also be a bazaar with sports products.

There will also be cultural tours of the city, photographic exhibitions, etc. while, on the day of the race, the municipal park next to the Theatre will be transformed into a small “Sports Village” with the participation of running and sports clubs and a large charity bazaar, with proceeds going to charitable foundations.

As part of the Athanasios Ktoridis Foundation’s policy to support needy organisations and help our fellow citizens, all the proceeds from registrations will be donated to the following charitable institutions, as was done in 2022.

  • Association of Parents and Friends of Children with Heart Disease

‘Quantum Nicosia Marathon’ on 10 December 2023 The only charity and cultural marathon of Cyprus

The annual charity and cultural event “Quantum Nicosia Marathon 2023” returns this year with a full programme of races and events on December 10, 2023.

Organiser and exclusive sponsor of the event since 2010 is the Athanasios Ktoridis Foundation, which as always aims to combine sports, culture and charity.

Within the framework of the organisation of the race, the Director of the Athanasios Ktoridis Foundation, Vasso Kourou and associate Haris Hatzisavvas, visited the Mayor of Aglantzia, Andreas Constantinou who agreed to cooperate with voluntary assistance from the municipality which is valuable for the smooth organisation of the Quantum Nicosia Marathon.

The Mayor’s enthusiasm and response was immediate.

Harakis and Kawalec the big winners of the «Quantum Nicosia Marathon 2022»

Nicosia, 11 December, 2022 – Yiorgos Harakis and Anna Kawalec from Poland were the big winners of the «Quantum Nicosia Marathon 2022», recording the best times in the men’s and women’s Marathon races held on Sunday morning.

Organiser and exclusive sponsor of the race was the Athanasios Ktorides Foundation, with the start and finish in front of the Nicosia Municipal Theatre. First Ambassador of the race was the EuroAsia Interconnector.

All the races of the day from 7am to 12 noon were shown live on CyBC TV and also worldwide on RIK-Sat.

The marathon route passed through the old city, on to Pallouriotissa and Aghlandjia, then to the University of Cyprus, about turn at Yeri and return through the Athalassa Park.

Harakis, who also won the “Stelios Kyriakides 7.7 miles” in last year’s race, won the Marathon in 2 hours 44 minutes and 27 seconds, almost nine minutes faster than Panos Georghiades (2.53:04) with Dimitris Koutsoumbidis from Greece in third (2.53:11).

Anna Kawalec from Poland was the winner of the women’s Marathon with a time of 3 hours 21 minutes and 03 seconds, followed by Irina Masanova from Russia (3.23:15) and Elena  Stylianou (3.52:27).

The winner of the Half Marathon was Vladimir Shcheblykin from Russia with a time of 1 hour 13 minutes and 44 seconds, with Christodoulos Protopapas second (1.14:10) and Alexandros Demetriou third (1.14:10).

First in the Half Marathon for women was Christina Kourri (1.32:57), Julia Andreou second (1.35:39) and Andri Soteriou third (1.35:59).

Winner of this year’s emblematic “Stelios Kyriakides 7.7 miles” race was Yiorgos Ttofi in 48 minutes and 28.57 seconds, followed by Savvas Savva (48:35.47) and Leandros Mama (48:41.50).

The women’s winner was Zozan Timurturkan with 51:42.06, followed by Elia Ioannou (53:25.27) and Panayiota Pantela (56:59.17).

The race honours the “77” shirt worn by the legendary Stelios Kyriakides from Paphos who won the Boston Marathon in 1946.

In an emotional presence, 220 commandoes from the National Guard took part in a special team effort to raise funds for two charities in memory of their late colleague Panayiotis Yiannios.

Yiorgos Ttofis won the 5 kilometre race in 15 minutes and 54 seconds, improving his own time of 16:12 when he won last year’s 5K race. Andreas Zenios was second (16:13) and Christos Kyrillou third (17:17).

The women’s winner of the 5K was Victoria Andreou (20.34), Evita Christoforou second (21.10) and Stavrini Tofarou Kanellou third (21:41).

The last race of the day was the Quantum sMile Run (1,610 metres) with the participation of hundreds of “athletes” of all ages.

All the funds from the participation fees goes to support the Alkinoos Artemiou Foundation, the Little Heroes, the Parents and Friends of Children with Heart Disease, Autism Cyprus, Mothers and Relatives of National Guard PEMSE and the Nicosia Municipal Multipurpose Community Centre.
